As mentioned previously, there are many types of cleaning businesses you can start in Zimbabwe, but I thought I’d take a few minutes to outline a few to give you a better idea of how easy it is and what’s possible.
Starting A Maid Service Business In Zimbabwe
Every working parent knows how difficult it can be to find a reliable maid. Many have resorted to hiring relatives or others from the rural areas who are usually unpolished and often disappoint. This is an opportunity for you to start a service to help others find reliable and professional help they need at home.
As the business owner, generally you’ll do the scheduling, handling customer relations issues, ordering supplies, answering the telephone, payroll, and billing, while the maids you’ve found and hired out, do the actual cleaning duties.
In Zimbabwe where economic challenges have taken their toll, women who were previously at home are being forced to work as well – leaving no one to do the house work.
Besides the working wife or mother situation there are also the more wealthy families where wife’s stay at home, but prefer to hire a maid anyway. Often times, especially in Zimbabwe, maids are not simply cleaners but also baby minders.
Starting A Janitorial Service Business In Zimbabwe
While maid services typically only clean homes, janitorial services clean business premises –places like offices, factories, restaurants, hotels, hospitals and schools.
A Janitorial business costs more in start up costs than a maid service, however it still isn’t much compared to other types of businesses you can start. It’s also possible to save costs by setting up a home based office in the beginning with only a little equipment and perhaps a small van to start.
Janitorial jobs are also typically much bigger and more profitable than maid service jobs. The types of businesses most likely to hire a janitorial service are those that have to be especially care about health standards (such as those that sell food or deal with medical needs) or else businesses that have special hospitality concerns like hotels and restaurants.
Another niche within the Janitorial category involves businesses that have very large or difficult to clean properties such as factories that may require a specialized type of cleaning.
Besides a focus on markets (consumer or commercial) like the two previous examples, some cleaners prefer to focus on cleaning specific things, like cars, windows or carpets. Although Zimbabwe already has a number of carpet cleaners, there is room for much more competition.
Start A Carpet Cleaning Company
Because carpeting is the most popular kind of floor covering choice for most people and businesses in Zimbabwe, the market is potentially massive. It’s also true that carpets require a regular thorough deep cleaning schedule (at least 4 – 12 times a year, depending on the amount of foot traffic) – which makes the market even more lucrative.
Commercial operations that use carpet cleaners include flats, office blocks and buildings, offices, schools, banks, restaurants, hotels and churches. Of course houses with carpets are also a good target for your business.
If you’re going to concerntrate your business more on the residential side, then it’s important to do a geographic (demographic) study of the homes and potential business in the areas you’re interested in.
The great thing about carpet cleaning is that it quickly opens ups other opportunities to expand the business further with closely related services such as Upholstery cleaning, wall cleaning, drapery cleaning, application of a fabric protector on carpet and upholstery, spot and stain removal from upholstery , smoke damage cleanup and fire restoration, water damage restoration, ceiling cleaning, carpet dyeing or carpet restoration.
Listen if you’re looking for a straight forward business with low barriers t entry financially for start ups, no ridiculous licenses required and easy to operate, then the cleaning business could be for you.
A few things to remember
- Register your company. This is a required legal step and is sometimes referred to as company formation.
- Choose what kind of cleaning business you want to start and whom you’ll target
- Consider and compare the startup cost implications for your new business. Consider the business setup kit as an easy way to speed things up and reduce startup costs.
- Go for it and don’t waste time
