Despite their success with search, with gmail and other things, social media has been a big problem for Google in recent years – Facebook and even twitter have virtually stolen the hearts, minds and email addresses of many millions, making Google’s failure even more apparent. Well as of yesterday, it’s possible that all that is about to change.
Introducing Google Buzz.
It looks like FriendFeed, acts like twitter and it’s all in your Gmail – it’s called Google Buzz. Go to your usual Gmail login page to sign up and it’s right in front of you.
Basically, now you can connect with your friends in Gmail in a new way. Buzz streams pictures, status updates and videos from all your friends right in your account and allows you to comment and ‘like’ (as on Facebook) them.
Normally a new social media site has to start from scratch, build a following over time and eventually (maybe) if it’s good enough – go viral. Not Google Buzz though. Placing it right inside Gmail is so smart and unexpected that it had me giddy, and it’s sent shock waves all across the internet.
Not only does this finally give Google a way to compete with other social sites, but it sky rockets Gmail as an email service, far higher than anyone else out there…comes excluding none (well until Facebook launches the full email service they’ve recently mentioned).
If you’re the kind to enjoy watching gruesome competition by the heavy weights…then keep your eyes on Google Buzz in the next coming weeks.
